What is God’s will for my marriage?

29 “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law. (Deuteronomy 29:29)

Jesus said concerning divorce,

31 “It was said, ‘Whoever sends his wife away, let him give her a certificate of divorce’; 32 but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. (Matthew 5:31-32)

And even in the case of unchastity (Greek #4204 porneia), the book of Hosea is God directing a prophet to forgive his unfaithful wife as a symbol for His relationship with Israel (Hosea 3:1). The New Living Translation translates Ezekiel 23:37

37 They have committed both adultery and murder—adultery by worshiping idols and murder by burning as sacrifices the children they bore to me. (Ezekiel 23:37 NLT)

My understanding of this is that God views idolatry as adultery. He is a God of letting people harvest what they plant, and Colossians 3:5 says greed amounts to idolatry. But it is clearly stated,

10 But to the married I give instructions, not I, but the Lord, that the wife should not leave her husband 11 (but if she does leave, she must remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband should not divorce his wife. (1 Corinthians 7:10-11)

These are instructions for believers who want to know God’s will for their marriage, in any circumstance. However, to the unbelievers,

15 Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace. (1 Corinthians 7:15)
