Who were David’s brothers?
Now David was the son of the Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, whose name was Jesse, and he had eight sons. And Jesse was old in the days of Saul, advanced in years among men. (1 Samuel 17:12)
To my understanding, the most comprehensive list of David’s brother’s names is found in 1 Chronicles 2:13-15,
And Jesse became the father of Eliab his firstborn, then Abinadab the second, Shimea the third, Nethanel the fourth, Raddai the fifth, Ozem the sixth, David the seventh;
The missing eighth brother I believe is found in 1 Chronicles 27:18 in a list of chief officers of the tribes under King David, it says,
for Judah, Elihu, one of David’s brothers;
I believe the reason for this displacement is a foreshadowing of Jesus and His brethren, us. Just because we are brothers and sisters of Christ doesn’t mean we can’t honor Him as our Master first. James and Jude agree.
James, a bond-servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, (James 1:1)
Jude, a bond-servant of Jesus Christ, and a brother of James, (Jude 1:1)
“Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?” And they took offense at Him. (Mark 6:3)
