What does homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of God mean?
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10)
What does it meant to inherit?
15 For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. (Hebrews 9:15)
Is it possible to be considered a believer but not receive this promised inheritance?
It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples. 2 He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying. (Acts 19:1-6)
And again in Ephesians, the Holy Spirit is called a pledge of our inheritance,
13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory. (Ephesians 1:13-14)
Because Romans says,
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; (Romans 10:9)
But Jesus says,
37 “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. (Matthew 10:37)
With the promise that,
29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life. (Matthew 19:29)
However, some are unable to do this. And I believe they will make it to heaven, but barely.
12 Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work. 14 If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. 15 If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. (1 Corinthians 3:12-15)
The root of the sin is identified in Romans.
If someone is living a blatant rebellious life towards God such as homosexuality, fornication, adultery, etc. it is because people in their life have exchange the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator (Romans 1:18-27). Their loved one’s hearts are filled with greed, which is idolatry (Exodus 34:7 x Colossians 3:5). And though God says in Ezekiel,
20 The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father’s iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son’s iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself. (Ezekiel 18:20)
The child would have to turn from their sins for the curse to be lifted (Ezekiel 18:21). That is why the Law is good and perfect for them (1 Timothy 1:8-11), it sets them free from their persecutors (John 8:31-32) and allows them the ability to lay down their arms against God and trust in the power of Jesus (Romans 8:6-7).
There are gifts of the Holy Spirit outlined in 1 Corinthians 12:7-11, but an example of someone who did give up their father and mother to follow God is Elisha (1 Kings 19:19-21). After he left his family, he resurrected the dead (2 Kings 4:32-35), supernaturally multiplied food (2 Kings 4:42-44), and other inheritances such as seen in the story of the floating axe head,
4 So he went with them; and when they came to the Jordan, they cut down trees. 5 But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water; and he cried out and said, “Alas, my master! For it was borrowed.” 6 Then the man of God said, “Where did it fall?” And when he showed him the place, he cut off a stick and threw it in there, and made the iron float. 7 He said, “Take it up for yourself.” So he put out his hand and took it. (2 Kings 6:4-7)
Elisha died (2 Kings 13:20) and awaits the resurrection. Jesus has resurrected. And He says,
12 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.
So, according to Scripture, I believe homosexuality will prevent you from your inheritance that you would receive before eternal life, which are glimpses into what eternity will be. Therefore,
17 Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us. 18 For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ, 19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who set their minds on earthly things. 20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; 21 who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.
