Gnats the finger of God?

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, that it may become gnats through all the land of Egypt.’” They did so; and Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff, and struck the dust of the earth, and there were gnats on man and beast. All the dust of the earth became gnats through all the land of Egypt. The magicians tried with their secret arts to bring forth gnats, but they could not; so there were gnats on man and beast. Then the magicians said to Pharah, “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had said.

The plague of insects was the third plague and the fourth miracle God had performed through Moses, but the first time the magicians acknowledged it as God’s work to Pharaoh. Why?

This miraculous sign involved creation from the dust of the earth (Exodus 8:16), which goes back to the creation of Adam in Genesis 2:7 where it says,

Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground,

God’s fingerprint is extracting the precious from the worthless and speaking things into being from nothing. And although frogs were created first, they came from the waters which God will remove in the New Heaven and Earth.
